Saints: State of the RB spot

What is going on with the Saints RBs?

By: Jake Rajala

The New Orleans Saints have had a rich history of running backs in the 21st century. I’m talking about Deuce MccAllister, Mark Ingram, Pierre Thomas, and of course: Alvin Kamara. Ingram and Kamara are studs. Yes, we will ignore their suspensions. It wasn’t like the mistakes that follows Bill Belichick and may play a part in in the Hall of Fame this season.

As of late, the Saints brought in Travis Etienne to be their lead halfback. He was born in Jennings, LA. The stars were aligned and he must bound to star in the Big Easy in the NFL. For some reasons, the football gods struck again. He suffered a hamstring injury. Personally, I believe they should be happy it’s not an ACL tear.

Could this be punishment on the Saints from the gods due to their bounty gate? Nonetheless, it is madness. The Saints 2026 first round pick Jordyn Tyson is injured and may not be ready within a few weeks. Let’s just hope that the sophomore QB that’s the same age as the fourth year QB Zach Wilson, doesn’t have an injury. Yes, I’m talking about QB Tyler Shough.

With Etienne MIA, the Saints really need to lean on Alvin Kamara. He will need to be less nonchalant in plays. Perhaps he will need a Snickers Airhead. After all, he has a popular partnership with Airheads.

The Saints may need to bring back Taysom Hill. We had an emotional good-bye to Hill, just as we did to Jimmy Graham, but Hill could still return. He is still available. Sean Payton may purse his lips and have the biggest call-sheet in the NFL, but that hasn’t prevented him from acquiring Hill, who he once compared to Steve Young.

Will Alvin Kamara be a Cowboy?

Will Kamara be a Cowboy soon?

There has been a lot of speculation that Alvin Kamara could be traded this off-season. Anthony Palacios of Last Word on Sports suggests that Kamara could be a Cowboy.

So, does Kamara seem like a logical fit for the Boys? Well, they seem to have a taste for washed up running backs that have been “accused” of punching someone. Isn’t that right Zeke Elliot?

The Boys aren’t in a dire need to pay a lot of money for another RB. They have Javonte Williams, who came over from Denver. He had 1,201 rushing yards and 11 rushing touchdowns last season. He is the same age as me and five years younger than Kamara! If they want an old RB like Kamara, some may ask: why not sign Frank Gore?

Kamara does have a lot of swag. He could bring back memories of Terrell Owens and Dez Bryant, who also had a lot of swagger. The difference between the two and Kamara is that those two WRs made first team All-Pro as a Cowboy and Kamara has never made first team AP.

In all honesty, I’d prefer to see the Boys had more talent on their OL, prior to reeling in an expensive RB. PFF dubs their OL as the 17th best OL in the league. That’s not acceptable. The former Cowboys Hall of Fame guard Larry Allen is rolling over in his grave.

I’m not saying that Kamara will run for six touchdowns in a single game with a stout OL. Nonetheless, he should excel behind a Top-10 OL. He can also be effective if he’s the 1B at RB.

Will Alvin Kamara return to stardom?

Will Kamara return to dazzle?

Alvin Kamara won offensive rookie of the year in 2017. He looked like the second coming of Reggie Bush. Flash forward to the Christmas game in December of 2020, he ran for six touchdowns. If Sean Payton had to save his life, he could have given Kamara a seventh rushing touchdown in the game.

As of late, Kamara looks like he lost a couple of steps. He has looked like an old Eddie Lacy or a young Trent Richardson. Believe it or not, Kamara unleashed 657 total yards last season. Perhaps Kamara forgot leave his Vegas incident behind him. Somebody should have told him what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.

It may be that Kamara spent to much time hanging around Taysom Hill in the 2025 offseason. They both look like a shell of their once self. Let it be known that AK had the worst PFF grade among RBs in 2025.

We’ve all seen the news: Travis Etienne has arrived in NOLA. So, does this mean that Kamara should leave? After all, Kamara left Alabama when they had a crowded RB room. Hopefully, Kamara doesn’t turn into the disgruntled way that Adrian Peterson was with the Saints.

The Saints once traded Jimmy Graham and Darren Sproles. Mickey Loomis isn’t scared to think outside the box. It would make sense for the Saints to ship away Kamara for a mid-round pick. I wouldn’t be shocked if the Denver Broncos try to reel in Kamara.
