Is Rob Ryan still in the league?
By: Jake Rajala
Everybody knows who Buddy Ryan is, as he was the architect behind the 1985 Bears defense. Buddy also loved smoking (which came from his pipe). Plus, if you won a Super Bowl in the 80s, then any type of pleasure is on the table.
Well, Buddy spit out a couple of sons (and twins) by the name of Rex and Rob. His status helped his sons get a foot in the door, just as how Mike Shanahan helped Kyle start, and how Gary Kubiak is helping Klay (49ers) and Klint (Seahawks) contribute in their early careers.
It’s impossible to miss the egos from Rex and Rob over recent years. The love to cause chaos on and off the field. They loved blitzing and hurting the opposing QBs. Well, there is video evidence of them fighting “off the field” in a dive bar. Buddy Ryan, who once got into a fight with Kevin Gilbride on the sidelines, knew his sons would follow in his footsteps.
Rex has taken his talents to a place where an analyst tries to have a really loud voice, rather than spew out facts and examples. Of course, the analyst I’m talking about is I’m talking is Stephen A (on ESPN).
Rex is 63 years old, so he still is young in football years. The analyst Al Michaels is 81 years old and the coach Bill Belichick is 73 years old. Hell, our President is 79 years old!
The real question is: Is Rob still coaching in the league?
Rob, who looks like he grew up in California in the 60s, is not currently in the NFL. Matter of fact, he is at USC, as their assistant head coach.
Rob had stints with a few NFL teams. His defense in Oakland, Cleveland, and Dallas weren’t overly lethal. However, he had one magical season in New Orleans, where his defense ranked fourth in PPG allowed and fourth in YPG allowed.
The coach that looks either looks majestic or greasy has football in his blood. I’m not saying he will coach as long as Tom Moore (who recently retired at 87), but I anticipate him moving around the CFB and NFL world for a few more years.
