The return of Geno Smith
By: Jake Rajala
Geno Smith has returned to the Big Apple. Of course, that’s where it all started for him. He didn’t have a butt fumble like former Jets QB, but he did unleash 21 interceptions as a rookie. He also didn’t have the former Jets HC (Adam Gase) that loves smelling salts and an Elizabeth Holmes-like glare in interviews. Smith had flashes, but he still struggled to be consistent.
Last season, the former Las Vegas Raider Smith threw a league high 17 interceptions and that came in 15 games. The coach (Chip Kelly) that loves conditioning more than “Herb Brooks”, got fired after 11 games. Smith didn’t come alive after that happened. Jon Gruden had a winning record (3-2) in 2021, but he resigned after the five games. He got “whacked” by The New York Times.
Today, Gruden works for Barstool and opens up gifts from NFL and CFB teams.
It’s quite fascinating that Smith went back to the team that drafted him. I wish we would witness this happen more in football. Among the Top 25 QBs in NFL history by NFL.com, none of them returned to the team that drafted them. Perhaps the lights are brighter in the Big Apple than other locations, so they allured Smith in.
Frank Reich is the Jets offensive coordinator. He was the interim head coach for Stanford last season. If Reich can be near what Jim Harbaugh was for Stanford, then the Jets are in good hands.
Smith can hand the keys to the rookie Cade Klubnik, after a few more seasons. Smith is 35 years old. He should look to be the same age that Brett Favre was with the Jets, which was 38 years old. In Favre fashion, he threw a league high 22 interceptions with the Jets. Hopefully, Smith doesn’t follow in those foot-steps.
