The story of Matt Ryan

The tale of Matt Ryan

By: Jake Rajala

Matt Ryan was taken third overall in the 2008 draft. He came out of Boston College. If he was better than former Boston QB Doug Flutie, perhaps he would have been selected first overall.

Ryan wasn’t a loose cannon. He did find success in Atlanta. After all, he was Offensive Rookie of the Year.

However things were often bumpy. He was the recipient of the elite New Orleans Saints pass rusher, Cameron Jordan sacking him. After all, he sacked him 23 times! That is the most sacks by one player against another in NFL history! It’s sad that the Falcons pass protection couldn’t slow down Jordan. Even at the age of 36, Jordan sacked Ryan once in each divisional showdown.

In all seriousness, Ryan won MVP in 2016. He did have the best WR in the league, Julio Jones, and an elite play-caller in Kyle Shanahan. Nonetheless, he did his part and did a fine job with it. Yes, they even reached the Super Bowl!

Falcons fans, you may not want to hear this. In the Super Bowl, Ryan helped the Falcons score 28 points in the second and third quarter. The problem was that Ryan didn’t put up any points in the fourth quarter or overtime! Fellow legendary Falcons QB Michael Vick would never disappear at the end of the Super Bowl!

Ryan really went out swinging at the end of his career. He didn’t have a winning record in any of his last five seasons! It’s safe to say a team won’t want to lure him out of retirement.

Philip Rivers joins the Colts

The Colts sign Philip Rivers

By: Jake Rajala

Philip Rivers has come back from the dead and joined the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts have a thing or two for old QBs. They tried the Matt Ryan experiment, but Matty Ice was clearly washed up.

Perhaps they should have called Andrew Luck to come out of retirement. He’s only 36 years old. He doesn’t have grandkids, like Rivers does.

If Rivers can’t sling the ball like he did in 2020, perhaps Indy should call Tom Brady or Brett Favre and try to lure one of them out of retirement.

Rivers was a first ballot Hall of Famer in my book. He just delayed his time until he gets a gold jacket. Sure, he had four seasons of 18+ interceptions. Nonetheless, he still found a way to win at the end of the day. After all, he did have a record of 134-106.

I don’t want to completely disrespect Rivers, but I still expect it to be the Jonathan Taylor show. In Peyton Manning’s last days in the league, the best thing he did was arguably hand the ball off and make short passes to his weapons. I expect that to be the case with Rivers.

On the bright side, Rivers returns to a team that he bled for already. Of course, he played for the Colts and, even led them to an 11-5 record in his final season. Colts fans can shake the dust off their Rivers jerseys and wear them on game day.
